This month’s prayer focus is on sports and recreation. For some sport has become a god to which much has been sacrificed – time, money, integrity, family to name but a few. Ball tampering in cricket, match fixing, illegal use of performance enhancing drugs, unfaithfulness in marriage, fornication have all shown up in sport. Yet also there have been acts of kindness and compassion. In themselves sport and physical recreation are good things when used to take part in exercising bodies and minds, competing or supporting and encouraging those who do. Recreation lets people bond in a non-threatening way, and opens incredible doors for the Gospel. Christian team coaches can teach discipline and values from a biblical perspective. Christians can bring biblical perspective into recreations they are involved in.

  • Pray that Christian athletes, mindful of sport’s temptation to pride, use their special gifts and talents to bring glory to God, giving thanks and praise to God.
  • Pray that families would be places where integrity, humility and kindness are valued, and winning at all costs is shunned, especially in the sporting arena.
  • Pray that parents, schools and coaches would teach honour and respect to those in the field of sport as well as courage and humility.
  • Pray that the youth, schools and parents would learn, both at school and at home, that it is not a disgrace to lose as long as all have done their best.
  • Pray that those involved in the sport industry would work together to ensure that matches are family friendly whether watched live or through media – that the culture of drug use, alcohol abuse, verbal abuse, unsafe gambling and worship of the body would be removed from this industry.
  • Pray that families would exercise wisdom in which sports become part of their family life – sports and recreations which display godly lifestyles, behaviors and values.
  • Pray for the marriages of all involved, that spouses would resist temptation, that decisions made would be in agreement, and that they would put themselves and any young children first.
  • Renounce corruption within this mountain.
  • Pray that God’s people will let their voices be heard in the market place as they financially support Godly sports and recreations.
  • Pray for the whole of professional sports – athletes, coaches, sponsors, sports commentators, media, supporters and families – that it will be used as a media to teach ethics, responsibility, and good values (Hebrews 12:1-2).
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”—
I Corinthians 13: 4-8
He (Jesus) answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?
