πορνεία – porneia

πορνεία, porneia The definition of πορνεία, porneia, in Strongs will be known by some but is worth repeating “harlotry (including adultery and incest); figuratively, idolatry: — fornication. Fornication being illicit sexual intercourse, adultery, fornication, homosexuality, lesbianism, intercourse with animals etc. sexual intercourse with close relatives [Leviticus 18] sexual intercourse with a divorced man or woman [Mark 10:11-12] According to the world model it is natural/right for pre-marital sex, co-habitation - for some a “try before you buy attitude”, others because it is “love” or just because it is what others do! We only need to look at some of the advertising around us to see how “sex- saturated” the world is. It is no wonder that without correct equipping, many people, particularly teenagers, feel the need to be sexually active. This is probably not helped by the current tendency of marriage not occurring until the median age of 29.9 for [...]

We (the church) should not be in fear of man

Over the last days there has been a great need to attend to the background 'running' of the Marriage Week web site - some of you may have seen that on occasions it has not been accessible. It has now been 'patched' but will being undergoing a rebuild over the coming weeks. Whilst this has been happening there has been increasingly the word "that we (the church) should not be in fear of man" to be so is an insidious attack on the word of God. Both these 'events' caused remembrance of the words of Bishop J C Ryle (1816-1900) in his "Expository Thoughts on Mark" an extract is shared below: Mark 10:1-12 The opening verse of this passage shows us the patient perseverance of our Lord Jesus Christ as a teacher. We are told that "Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the [...]

Reaping and Sowing

Are we reaping what we have sowed - or rather not sowed? There is evidence that in nations - including Australia - that the church has not been sowing into marriage and the Lord's design, plan and purpose for it. A task that is of great importance to the church is to restore, preserve and support a Godly marriage culture – even though to many around us, marriage has lost its meaning. The “Revolutions” in our society - over such things as no-fault divorce, the separation of sex from marriage and so much more - over the last 20 plus years have brought “my rights” and “self” to the forefront. With increased sexual freedom outside of marriage, marriage itself has lost respect and to some it seems to be just a legal contract that can be broken with ease. With children commonly being born outside of marriage, marriage has become a [...]

Five Keys of a Successful Marriage

In Matthew 19: 4-6, Jesus said that "at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female' and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one." Jesus then added "Therefore, what God has joined together, let man not separate.” In Ephesians 5:28-32, marriage is discussed this way: - “In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church –for we are members of the body. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and the two shall become one flesh.” What is important [...]

Being salt & light in today’s world

Has the church slowly and un-noticeably been put into maintenance mode through the impact of the world around us? The need to implement and keep up to date the appropriate 'child protection policies', the annual returns required by the Australia Charities & Non-profits Commission, the BAS returns. Then there are the insurance declarations, making representation to MP's, Senators on proposed changes that go against scripture. Outside of all of these things we also seek plans/programs to equip the people of the church for their ministry and there are many out there. We need to make sure that we stay within our scriptural authority. Whilst the church's care of its people has importance in local church ministry and Jesus modelled the leadership of a loving shepherd, but he never allowed this to overshadow the mission. Equipping the body of the church for ministry is more than for their ministry within the [...]

Marriage, Family, Children, Education

The fruits of marriage - families - are visible, whether good fruit or bad, across all domains…..nations. Over the years the idea of “marriage” and its’ history has been much discussed and written about, which has undoubtedly been used to help the arguments of some on what ‘marriage’ is or should be. It is interesting to note here that The European Court for Human Rights has ruled that same-sex “marriages” are not considered a human right, making it clear that homosexual partnerships do not in fact equal marriages between a man and a woman. The ruling was announced June 9 in the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France, and closed out a discussion dating to 2004. (see APN International News dated 18th July) For us the record of creation and the first marriage (and the ‘fall’) is well known, but worth repeating: “Then the Lord God made the [...]

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband..”—
Ephesians 5. 31-33
